Lloyd's of London is an unconventional Insurance Brand where as it is not a company but operates as a market where it's members form syndicates to insure risk. In 1688 a Welshman called Edward Lloyd opened a Coffee House in Tower Street, close to the Tower of London. It soon became a meeting place for ship owners and merchants and for the frst underwriters who insured their ships and cargos. Since then the Corporation of Lloyd's has grown into one of the leading Insurance Markets in the World.
Business is conducted face-to-face between Brokers and Underwriters in an Underwriting Room which is known just as the 'Room'.
